You, the audience, are the detectives and along with one of the improvisers you are studying the crime scene and interviewing the potential suspects to discover who murdered the victim and why. The murder victim’s name, the weapon used to kill them and the career of the victim are all up to the audience to decide. At the end of the improv the audience also gets to vote on who the murderer was.
This was a fun hour of good structured improv. The structure was incredibly important to the improvisation and I feel actually improved the quality of the story. Without the structure long form improv can sometimes get very off topic and the improvisers can get carried away. I’ve seen some improv where the improvisers cannot stop laughing at themselves and each other whilst the audience sits in stony silence but this was not the case with CSI.
Being able to question the suspects and the added mystery of a crime was a brilliant device used to not only carry the narrative but keep the audience interested and involved. The audience had to pay attention as they were trying to work out who the murderer was. Having one improviser to guide the audience through the story was also really helpful and again kept the story contained and fun.
The only let down was sometimes, even when contained, the story got wacky and silly which can be fun but here was taken to some extremes.
Overall, a fun hour of improv with strong performances from the cast. I would recommend this show to all fans of improv.
