Come From Away is one of, if not, my favourite musical and seeing it again in Glasgow was such a joy. The musical follows the people in Newfoundland in particular in Gander and the surrounding towns as the American airspace closed after 9/11 and planes were diverted to Gander. The musical focuses on the kind acts of the people of Gander towards all the people who were diverted to their town and also explores the feelings and fears of everyone during that historic time.
I was unaware of 9/11 when it happened as I was too young but this musical highlights the feelings and fears of everyone around that time and captures a moment beautifully. The musical remembers the loss of life but balances this with the strength and kindness of the people of Gander.
The cast were extremely talented and I couldn’t pick out an individual to highlight as it was such great ensemble work. The accents were great with some slight wobbles but when I saw this musical on Broadway there may have been accent wobbles as well but it is more difficult for me to tell the difference between the American and Gander accent.
For the touring version of this show the revolve was not used but I didn’t miss this element and the strength of the material really shone through with the small changes and individual choices of the cast and creative team. The production doesn’t stray from the material but each actor and artist who works on each production will bring something new and those small changes didn’t affect the production at all. In other shows I have found myself missing particular actors or small choices but in this production everything was just as brilliant as the first time I saw the show on Broadway.
I would highly recommend this exceptional musical as must see theatre for everyone. It will lift your spirits and remind yourself of the goodness of humanity and this cast and production shine brilliantly, beautifully reflecting the efforts and sacrifices of the people of Gander more than twenty years ago.
