The Jaffa Cake Musical follows a fictionalised version of the real trial between McVities and HMRC over whether Jaffa Cakes are cakes or biscuits and the tax implications of this decision.
The music had a few stand out songs including the prosecutors arguments and the HMRC “villain” song. Whilst this was a fun hour of theatre, I found myself not caring about the lawyer for the prosecution backstory about her parents. I’m not sure whether the show was too short for such depth whilst balancing the humour or whether the show didn’t suit an emotional subject.
Costumes and set were used effectively and efficiently to nod to the colours of Jaffa Cakes. For a fun and frivolous hour of theatre the Jaffa Cake Musical is perfect but don’t expect an in-depth emotional plot as this show doesn’t deliver it but I would argue nor should it.
