Miss Congeniality: The Unauthorised Musical Concert retold the original film story of an FBI agent who joins the Miss United States pageant in order to foil a plot against the contestants.
The score was fine but with very few memorable musical moments. By sticking exactly to the original film; adaptations sometimes miss which moments to musicalize as they don’t want any famous lines to be missed out in scenes. This musical seemed to struggle with this problem and found it difficult to keep our attention at the slower moments of the plot. The singers sometimes seemed to be struggling with the vocal demands of the score which lead to the show seeming a little under rehearsed.
The love story between the two main FBI agents felt lost in this adaptation and the script lost a lot of it’s charm in this reworking. The script wasn’t as funny as the original film although a number of the same jokes were used. Adapting the script for the stage rather than trying to exactly recreate moments from the film may have helped create more humour and reflect the original tone of the film.
Overall, I can see Miss Congeniality working as a musical adaptation but this version did not. With some serious script reworking and creating more iconic musical moments this production has the potential to become a bigger show.
