Chicago

Chicago

Chicago follows Roxie Hart who murders the man she is having an affair with as he threatens to end their relationship. On being sent to prison she meets Velma Kelly and other female prisoners who have also murdered their husbands and lovers. The story then follows Roxie and Velma as they try to get away with murder and convince the jury to find them not guilty whilst forging a career on the stage with all their new found infamy.

The set for this production was elegant with the orchestra and the actors in the Ensemble seated onstage. This created a cabaret feel and also reflected the feeling of being watched, which the women in prison due to their high-profile crimes and trials, constantly are. The ladders that rose up to the proscenium gave dimension to the set and were cleverly used, particularly towards the end of Act 2.

You cannot write about Chicago without mentioning the dancing. The productions dance numbers shone and were a testament to the talent of the cast and choreographer. The music was fantastic and the classic numbers were performed so brilliantly. I was particularly surprised by ‘Mr Cellophane’ which was extremely endearing and beautifully performed.

Overall, this production was incredible, brought to life by a wonderful cast and talented musicians. I would highly recommend this fun and entertaining show for a great evening.
