Mary Poppins tells the story of the original Julie Andrews film with additional music. For those unfamiliar, the Banks family need a nanny and Mary Poppins answers their call – in her short time with the family the children travel on magical adventures and she teaches them to be better behaved. However, Mary Poppins is really there to teach their father how to better love his children and his wife.

The show was magical with beautiful costumes and fun and clever sets. The original score was fantastic but the new songs didn’t live up to the beauty of the original songs from the film. Clever adjustments, from the film, were made to transfer the show to the stage with the penguins in the ‘Jolly Holiday’ sequence being substituted with an alternate source of fun.

Some of the best moments are the brilliantly choreographed dance sequences with some amazing surprises. The musical ends with a truly magical moment and the case really hold this production up with superb performances and astonishing dancing.

Overall, the show was well acted with some fun additional scenes and the original beautiful score but it just doesn’t beat the original film. For a family day out, I would highly recommend Mary Poppins but don’t expect it to outperform the original.
